Description

Messier 101 (NGC 5457) is a face on spiral galaxy 21.8 million light years distant in the constellation of Ursa Major.  It is 184,000 light years in diameter.  

The galaxy was discovered by Pierre Méchain on 27 March 1781.   He described it as a "Nebula without star, very obscure and pretty large, 6' to 7' in diameter".

M101 was photographed between 14 March and 17 April 2023.
